Soil Sleuths: Part 1 of a 4-Part Soil Health Series

October 5 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm UTC-7

Oregon State University’s Agriculture soil expert Nan Xu demonstrates how to collect and prepare a soil sample with a soil probe.

Take a closer look at the foundation growing your food, flowers or pasture! OSU Assistant Professor of Practice in General Agriculture, Nan Xu will lead us through a hands-on demonstration on how to use a soil probe to collect a soil sample, and discuss how to determine the best timing, depth, and locations for collecting representative samples. Nan will also lead a hands-on texture analysis and talk about the soil test kits—such as N-P-K strips and moisture meters. These can be engaging tools for home gardeners, however, we’ll discuss what they can and can’t reliably tell us. A list of regional soil testing labs will be provided with guidance on choosing the right lab and analysis package based on the participant’s needs. This is part one of a four-part series.
