Cover Crops May Cause Winter Warming in Snow-Covered Regions

Cover crops provide many local benefits to farmers and can increase carbon storage in soils. In this study, cover crops are planted in all agricultural regions in North America to test their effect on wintertime temperatures. Evidence shows that that cover crops can potentially warm winter temperatures up to 3°C in regions with fluctuating winter snowpack. This study aims to determine is planting cover crop varieties that are considered less leafy or get buried under snowpack can help to minimize winter warming.
