This train-the-trainer event provides a foundation for understanding how cover crops may be incorporated into Midwestern cropping systems, including considerations for changes in nutrient and pest management; as well as understanding cropping systems that can lead to improved soil health. Target audience for this training includes Indiana Conservation Partnership (Indiana NRCS, Purdue Extension, Indiana SWCD, ISDA, IDEM, IDNR, SSCB, Indiana FSA) staff, farmer-mentors, agronomists, and other ag professionals who have not attended Advanced Soil Health / Cover Crops Trainings.

TOPICS:

  • Cover crops – Benefits, selection, and basic identification. Seeding and termination basics. Available resources.
  • No-till – Equipment basics, adaptive systems management.
  • Insect pests and beneficials – impacts of soil health systems, pest management considerations.
  • Weed management – basic weed management considerations, impacts of herbicide carry over on cover crop establishment.
