SUMMARY:Virtual: IMPACT2 Decision-Support Tools for a Resilient Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:more info / register \nThe North Central Climate Collaborative (NC3) is working to increase the flow and usability of climate information for Extension\, farmers\, natural resource managers\, and communities. As part of this work\, the team hosts bimonthly webinars for water and climate professionals on a range of topics related to climate\, water\, and agriculture. \nThis webinar will provide a firsthand look at two innovative tools designed specifically for Midwest agriculture: the ACRE (Agricultural Conservation for Resilient Environments) Portal\, an interactive online platform for evaluating and comparing conservation practices\, and the AgFutures of the Midwest\, an engaging\, tabletop game designed to explore farm decision-making under climate and market uncertainty. Built on USDA NRCS Conservation Practice Standards and developed by a multidisciplinary team of experts\, these resources provide actionable strategies to manage risk\, improve resilience\, and help farms thrive in an uncertain future.\nAbout the Speakers: \n\nAna Hummes is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Purdue University\, where she collaborates with the IMPACT Project and the ACRE Portal to support climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture. Previously\, Dr. Hummes served as a researcher with the USDA Agricultural Research Service\, focusing on soil health\, bio stimulants\, crop productivity\, and regenerative agriculture. Her work is dedicated to translating scientific research into practical solutions.\nTracy Campbell is a Research Specialist with the Puerto Rico Association of Conservation Districts. Dr. Campbell was formerly a USDA Climate Hub Fellow\, where she investigated nutrient cycling in agroforestry systems.\nShivika Aggrawal is a Ph.D. candidate at Purdue University and an interdisciplinary researcher with the Center for Community & Environmental Design\, where she works with Dr. Aaron Thompson. Her research explores how farmers and communities remember\, learn from\, and respond to environmental change\, with a particular focus on social-ecological resilience in Midwest agriculture. Drawing on her background in engineering and sociology\, Shivika uses participatory research\, stakeholder engagement\, and serious games to make complex sustainability challenges more approachable and support meaningful conversations about resilient futures.\n\n

SUMMARY:Virtual: Solar and farmland: Navigating local land use\, conservation\, and farm economics
DESCRIPTION:more info / register \nPart of the Local Government Education programming series\, the Resilient Communities webinar series is a collaboration between University of Illinois Extension and Prairie Rivers Network that seeks to empower communities by highlighting local success stories\, sharing science-based educational content\, and providing practical tools to implement community projects that build resilience. \nSolar and farmland: Navigating local land use\, conservation\, and farm economics \nTuesday\, October 27\, at 12 noon CT\nAs solar development grows across Illinois\, agrivoltaics\, the integration of solar energy production alongside agricultural production\, is being explored as a way to balance renewable energy production\, diversify income streams\, and conserve farmland. These new projects are prompting community leaders to consider the potential benefits and tradeoffs of agrivoltaics. \nJoin this webinar for a deep dive on the trends and research exploring the connections between solar development and farmland conservation\, including: \n\nAndrea Wagner\, Sustainable Energy Specialist: How solar is affecting local land use\, including solar land leases\, the rate of farmland conversion to solar development\, and an overview of the Agricultural Impact Mitigation Agreement (AIMA) process required in Illinois that ensures land developed for solar is restored to pre-construction conditions.\n\n\nClaire Shipp\, Midwest Policy Manager: American Farmland Trust’s Smart Solar℠ initiative\, which brings solar developers\, landowners\, farmers\, community organizations\, and policymakers together to advance policies and programs that support renewable energy adoption while strengthening farm viability and protecting natural resources.\n\n\nDr. Paul Mwebaze\, Visiting Scholar: An analysis of the cost and benefits of row crops and solar from the University of Illinois’ iSEE Sustainability Colocating Agricultural and Photovoltaic Electricity Systems (SCAPES) project.\n\nThis webinar is the second in a three-part series addressing top questions and concerns from local governments navigating solar development. Join us November 10 to learn more about wildlife interactions with solar. \nIf you will need a reasonable accommodation to participate\, please email mdelany2@illinois.edu. Early requests are strongly encouraged to allow sufficient time to meet your access needs. \nFor more information on the Resilient Communities Webinar Series\, contact: Linda Derhak\, National Resources\, Energy\, and Environment\, Illinois Extension\, at lderhak2@illinois.edu

SUMMARY:Virtual: Making Sense of 45Z: Can Fuel and Food Co-Finance the Regenerative Transition?
DESCRIPTION:more info / register\nRegrow and Richards Lake Partners are excited to bring you a session on the overlap between food and fuel supply chains through the lens of 45Z\, the Clean Fuel Production Credit. Join us to understand the scale and scope of this incentive\, as well as opportunities for collaboration within specific crop supply chains. \nWith the USDA’s 45Z regenerative ag guidance now settled\, fuel producers have begun paying farmers to lower the Carbon Intensity (CI) of their feedstocks through conservation tillage\, cover cropping and nitrogen management. Meanwhile\, food and beverage companies have been funding the same set of practices\, often with the same farmers\, through their own sustainability programs. \nBoth markets are now competing for farmer attention. Can they work together instead?\nOn October 28th @ 1:00 PM Central\, Anastasia Volkova (Co-founder and CEO at Regrow) and Brad Justice (Founder at Richards Lake Partners) will walk through how 45Z works\, where the money goes\, and what it means for corn\, soy and the crops that rotate with them. Then we’ll get practical: how fuel and food companies can stack incentives and build programs that deliver for both growers and their supply chain partners. You’ll leave knowing where 45Z shows up in your supply chain and what to talk through with your suppliers or customers. \nRegister below and learn: \n\nThe basics of 45Z: CI scoring\, qualifying crops and practices\, and the USDA’s FD-CIC calculator\nHow corn\, soy\, sorghum\, canola and rotation crops split between fuel\, feed and food\nWhy geography matters\, and which regions stand to earn the most\nHow suppliers and food companies can stack incentives\, and considerations for existing commitments\nWhere 45Z adoption stands today\nWhat’s settled\, what’s still open\, and how durable the credit is likely to be\n\n45Z programs are already paying farmers\, and decisions about this year’s crop are being made now. Whether you work in sustainable procurement\, grain merchandising or conservation programs\, bring your questions and have them answered live.
