SUMMARY:How-to’s of Production Farming: Crop Planning & Management
DESCRIPTION:Crop planning is essential to successful food production allowing for efficient use of space and resources\, seasonal adaptation\, soil health\, pest & disease management\, increased yields & profitability and market timing to name a few. \nIn this 2 – part crop planning workshop\, Lisa Attaway\, farm manager with Green City Growers\, will discussing the fundamentals of putting an effective crop plan together that ensures a successful growing operation. \nEstablished in 2008\, Green City Growers is a leading force in the Urban Agriculture Industry. Learn more about their contributions to urban agriculture.\nSaturday\, November 16\, 2024 \n9am-1pm\nPart 1: Fundamentals of Crop Planning \nIn this introductory session\, participants will learn the essentials of crop planning and management. This workshop will cover what crop planning entails\, why it is crucial for a successful growing season\, and how to develop an effective crop plan. Participants will gain insights into selecting crops\, timing plantings\, and managing resources to maximize yields and minimize waste. \nSaturday\, November 23\, 2024 \n9am-1pm\nPart 2: Hands-On Crop Planning \nIn this practical\, interactive session\, participants will apply the principles from Part 1 to create their own spring crop plans. With guidance from Lisa\, participants will map out their garden spaces\, select appropriate crops\, and schedule planting dates to suit their unique needs. By the end of this workshop\, each participant will have a tailored crop plan to guide them through the upcoming growing season. \n__\nIf you are unable to attend both\, you have the option of registering one class. However\, for comprehensive learning\, we encourage attending both classes. \n** If you have a laptop\, please bring it with you! \n** Food will be provided

SUMMARY:Get It Done With a Drone Cover Crop Field Day\, Seymour\, IN
DESCRIPTION:Get it Done With A Drone Cover Crop Field Day \nThursday\, November 21\, 2024\n4-6 PM\nSeymore High School\nAg Science Facility\n721 F Ave E\nSeymour\, IN \nJoin us in Jackson County on Thursday\, November 21 at the Seymour High School Ag Science Facility for a FREE cover crop field day. Learn how you can use drones to plant cover crops while your main crop is still growing. This allows the cover crops to get a head start before winter weather arrives and also means one less pass over the fields with heavy equipment. \nIn September\, the school used a drone to plant oats\, radish\, and crimson clover into standing soybeans. We will watch video footage of the seeding\, walk the fields to see how the cover crops are growing\, and hear from experts with Premier Ag and WinField United. Cover crops are a great way to build soil health and to protect the soil during the winter months. However\, it can be challenging to get cover crops planted after the main crops are harvested. There are only a handful of crops that can be planted in October or November with cereal rye being the most common. Drones allow a producer to plant cover crops earlier in the season\, providing more choice in plant varieties and increasing the likelihood of significant plant growth before frost arrives. Come and see how it’s working for the high school and what might work for your farm. \nWe will also talk about funding opportunities including the Lake Monroe Watershed Conservation Cost-Share Program. This program covers up to 75% of the cost of select conservation practices in the Lake Monroe watershed\, which spans portions of Monroe\, Brown\, and Jackson counties. Participants are also welcome to stay and join the Seymour chapter of Future Farmers of America for dinner at 6:00. SUMMARY:Improving Soil Health Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Farming with Biology!\nCome join us in Tribune\, KS for an exciting event where we explore the fascinating world of farming through the lens of biology. Jay Young and Tyler Johnson will lead the day discussing their firsthand experiences implementing compost extracts to improve soil health and profitability! Their topics will cover economics\, applications\, tools\, and their own journey through this time. \nTyler will also share his experience working with local farmers as he helps provide them with the products and tools needed to begin their journey. This will be a great topic as many times the hardest part is just getting started! \nJay will cover more extensively rotational grazing\, making compost and compost extracts as well as thinking outside the box to increase revenue. \nThere will also be a farmer panel to round out the day. A.J. Crotinger\, Eric Lobmeyer and Jerry Young will discuss the challenged they have faced with weed management and some of the tactics they have used to combat those stubborn weeds. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals\, exchange ideas\, and discover innovative ways to enhance your farming techniques. Whether you’re a seasoned farmer or just starting out\, there’s something for everyone at Farming with Biology! \nJoin us in person for a day filled with knowledge\, networking\, and inspiration.
