SUMMARY:Soil Health & Irrigation Management in Vineyards
DESCRIPTION:Workshop in Spanish | Taller en Español\nLearn how soil health influences irrigation efficiency and vineyard resilience. This hands-on workshop will cover soil sampling\, irrigation management and how improving soil health can increase water retention and carbon sequestration. We’ll focus on irrigation management strategies\, using technology to optimize irrigation timing and water use\, and conducting distribution uniformity tests to improve system efficiency. \nHands-on Soil Health training: \n\nLearn how to collect and assess soil samples (field and lab analysis)\nThe role of organic matter in soil health and carbon sequestration\nSustainable farming practices for climate resilience\n\nIn-field Irrigation Demo & Testing : \n\nLearn how soil properties affect water movement and retention\nUse technology for irrigation planning (timing & water quantity)\nConduct irrigation system distribution uniformity tests\n\nWhat to Bring: Want to see how your soil measures up? Bring a sandwich-size bag from your vineyard for testing!\nLunch will be provided. \n¿Quieres registrarte en español? Vea el evento en español aquí. \n**Note: This event has separate registration pages in English and Spanish\, but it is a single event conducted entirely in Spanish. Register on either page.

SUMMARY:Virtual - Maximizing Marginal Croplands Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Free Webinar April 15\, Noon CT \nEighth National Cover Crop Survey Explores Advisors’ Attitudes and Outlook \nJoin Conservation Technology Information Center\, USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program\, and the American Seed Trade Association for the release of the eighth National Cover Crop Survey during a free webinar April 15\, Noon Central Time. \nThe biennial survey has captured farmer sentiment in the past\, and this year’s iteration is the first to survey farm advisors. This novel approach provides insights on advisors’ attitudes on cover crops\, how they get information\, and how cover crops fit with other technical assistance and advisory services they provide. The survey was conducted online in October 2024 and was completed by 654 farm advisors. \nKey findings include:\nAdvisors who also farm and use cover crops in their own operations are five times more likely to recommend them to their clients\, and in turn\, their clients are more likely to use cover crops.\nA majority of farm advisors expect to see cover crop acreage continue to increase.\nA majority of respondents expect farmers to continue to increase the use of cover crop mixes and try ways to combine other soil health practices with cover crops. \nPresenters include:\nDr. Rob Myers\, Director of the Center for Regenerative Agriculture at the University of Missouri\, Extension Professor in the Plant Science and Technology Division\, and Regional Director of Extension Programs for the USDA North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program\nRyan Heiniger\, Executive Director of Conservation Technology Information Center and 4th-generation Iowa Farmer\nAndy LaVigne\, President and CEO of American Seed Trade Association \nThe American Soybean Association also supported this research. \nLearn more in this free webinar as we go deeper into the results and what it means for American agriculture.

SUMMARY:Soil Testing for Soil Health
DESCRIPTION:Soil Testing for Soil Health with farmer and educator Rose Cherneff \nIn this workshop\, we will deep dive into all things soil! The beginning of the growing season is the ideal time to get to know your soil\, and learn how to work with it to make your garden healthy all year long.We will learn how to take soil samples and interpret the results of a soil test\, and discuss how to amend our soil based on those results. In addition\, we will discuss the ways that climate change and political violence are impacting soil health near and far\, and explore bioremediation techniques that can support us in nurturing healthy soil in the future. \nRose Cherneff is a community gardener\, and longtime valley farmer and educator\, who runs community classes through Gardening for the Future exploring how to grow food and build community in the face of climate change. \nSliding scale\, $0-30 (suggested fee: $15) \nRegistration required \nRain date: Monday\, April 21\, 5:30 – 7:30 pm

SUMMARY:Beyond the Lab Test: Applied Soil Science with Nance Klehm
DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on workshop participants will learn basic physical geology of the area through direct study of rock\, mineral and soil samples. Later we leave for the field to do a brief ready practice soil assessment methods of testing composition\, structure\, permeability and how this helps shape soil ecology. \nThe workshop will end with a lively discussion of our experiences and findings and next steps to stewarding soils more deeply and intentionally to support their healthy ecology. Participants are asked to bring 2 cups of soil for testing\, a paper and pencil for notes and dress prepared to go outside. \nNance Klehm has been an ecological systems designer\, landscaper\, horticultural consultant\, and agroecological grower for more than three decades. Her approach is centered on instigating change by activating already existent communities\, and her work demonstrates her lifelong commitment to redefining the way human populations coexist with plant and animal systems on this planet. \nA consultant\, speaker\, and teacher\, Nance is internationally respected for her work on land politics and soil health. We are so excited to have her at Gwenyn Hill Farm. Learn more about Nance and her work HERE.

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Economics of Climate Change for Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Register here. \nThe Economics of Climate Change for Agriculture \nClimate change has the potential to impact crop yields and agricultural practices\, thereby affecting the farmers and rural communities where they live. In this webinar\, Dr. Sarah Sellars will discuss the potential yield effects of climate change and how this could impact Midwestern farmers economically. She will also consider the costs of adopting climate-smart agricultural practices and how to help farmers overcome economic barriers to adoption.
