Influence of Recurrent Rolling/Crimping on Cover Crop Termination, Soil Strength and Yield in No-Till Cotton

Rollers/crimpers have been used to terminate cover crops typically with supplemental herbicide application to speed-up termination. Due to environmental concerns, there is a need to reduce herbicide use. Terminating tall cover crops in a no-till system is associated with flattening and damaging plant tissue due to crimping action to promote desiccated cover crop residue to form. The objectives of this study were to determine the effectiveness of different roller/crimper designs in terminating cereal rye cover crop and to determine the effects of multiple rolling/crimping on soil compaction.
